While the concept of the breakbeat originated in 1970s New York hip-hop, British producers in the late 1980s and early '90s radically reimagined it. Speeding and chopping up the loops, pairing them with deep reggae-influenced sub-bass, and filtering them through illegal warehouse rave and pirate radio culture. This process created a distinctly British sound that fundamentally changed global dance music
